Abstract

The change in light absorption which occurs when a polymer changes from an ordered (native) to a disordered (denatured) structure is attributed to the interaction between the dipoles induced in the chromophores by the light. Calculated values for the relative absorption coefficients of native deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and its mononucleotides are consistent with the experimental fact that the light absorption of native DNA is about 60% of the absorption of its mononucleotides. © 1960, American Chemical Society.
