Abstract

This lens makes use of 3-dimensional index distribution prepared from selective diffusion which enables one to fabricate monolithic 2-dimensional microlens arrays. A monomer exchange-polymerization technique has been initially tested for a plastic microlens. Ion exchange and electromigration have been examined for a glass microlens. The planar microlens fabricated with electromigration has 2. 9 mm of focal length and 0. 9 mm in diameter and focuses a He-Ne laser beam into a 7 mu m spot. A 2 multiplied by 2 optical tap array has been demonstrated by using the planar microlens array.
