Abstract

Calculations based on one month of global atmospheric observations are shown for the transports of sensible and latent heat and kinetic and geopotential energy. Their sum, the total energy transport by the atmosphere, is compared with satellite information of the radiational imbalance of the earth-atmosphere system. The accuracy of the calculations, the energy transport by the oceans and the eddy diffusivity indicated by the 'observed' transports is discussed.-from Author
