Abstract

This chapter updates literature on shame, guilt, and workplace bullying and introduces different possible cognitive behavioral approaches that could be used to help remediate the shame underlying bullying in the workplace. Differences between shame and guilt are distinguished in terms of their consequences. Given these consequences, a move towards guilt promotion (i.e., acceptance of responsibility) will be argued. Methods to move from shame to guilt will be explored using different cognitive behavioral approaches with an emphasis on strategies for overcoming shame and promoting pro-socialwork behaviors such as taking responsibility and experiencing empathy.
