Abstract

Cellulose is an important carbon source in aquatic ecosystems receiving or producing organic matter of vascular plant origin. Heterotrophic microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria cleave the high-molecular weight compounds into smaller fragments, which they incorporate into their own biomass, thus making the carbon available to members of the food webs that lack the capability of hydrolyzing native cellulose.
