Abstract

A fullcolor LCD with micro-color-filters, previously suggested, has now become a practical reality through the efforts of many researchers and developers. However, this LCD needs backlight, hence its power consumption is an important problem in some applications. Therefore, in this paper, the authors investigate a reflective multicolor LCD without backlight. The key to this reflective color LCD is increasing the availability of incident light as much as possible. Accordingly, the properties of various liquid crystal modes are evaluated and a phase-change-type guest-host mode is adopted. Electro optical properties of this mode are analyzed theoretically and optimal conditions of various parameters are clarified. In addition, the reflective color LCD was developed according to these conditions, and it is shown that the color LCD was almost the same brightness as a conventional black and white LCD.
