Abstract

The development of the jaws influences the face, the periodontium, the teeth, and the airway. It is important that one understands the development of critical structures in the human craniofacial skeleton so that therapy can be applied appropriately under basic tenants of growth and development. This chapter reviews the embryologic basis for bone formation in the human craniofacial skeleton and key considerations for surgeons if there is a need for surgically alternating natures canvas. This fundamental knowledge of growth and development gives clues as to why structures present in unique patterns for patients.
