Abstract

Due to their sensory, cognitive and motor preconditions, senior cyclists represent a group of road users who are particularly at risk in road traffic. Knowing that senior cyclists were rarely in the focus of technical developments so far, the present paper explores the potential for assistance systems taking into account their preconditions and needs. The described research is part of a requirements analysis, based on desk research, a review of accident data and qualitative assessments. The results can contribute to a better understanding of situational factors and age-related declines with a possible impact on the safety of senior cyclists. Furthermore, they can be used as a basis for technical developments that aim at improving the safety of senior cyclists.
