Abstract

The use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in severe acute asthma is controversial. pH <7.25, PaCO2>60 mmHg, altered mental status have been described as contraindications to NIV in acute asthma exacerbation. This case shows that in a patient who does not respond to oxygen therapy, NIV has been effectively used to treat hypoxemia and hypercapnia associated with asthma exacerbation.
