Abstract

FGM (female genital mutilation)/ FGM-C (female genital mutilation and cutting) affects millions of women worldwide and – due to ongoing migration – is becoming more and more visible/obvious in gynecological practice or clinical routine also in German-speaking countries. Many victims lack knowledge about psychological and or physical consequences due to FGM/FGM-C. Only a change of mind inside the communities which is still practicing FGM/ FGM-C can stop further spread. Medical history should (also when in doubt whether the patient is affected or not) include careful but direct questions about FGM/FGM-C and should at the same time offer more information and education on the sequelae.
