Abstract

Catholic spirituality is presented in terms of Pope Benedict XVI’s emphasis on God’s love as the starting point of the Christian faith. This love is the driving force behind authentic human and economic development and leads people to courageously work for justice and peace. Spirituality begins with receiving the gift of God’s love and then responding to the needs of one’s neighbor as individuals and as an ecclesial community. The Catholic ideals for economic justice emerge from the interplay of faith, reason, and action. The bold words and actions of Pope Francis challenge the Catholic Church and world leaders to transform attitudes and global forces which marginalize and exclude the poor and powerless.
