Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

Abstract

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) is based on the principles of restrictive and malabsorptive bariatric operations. First performed by Mason and Ito in 1966, it has evolved into the centerpiece bariatric operation for the resolution of comorbid disease and excess weight in the United States. Two critical changes to the operation have contributed to its current reputation: Griffen modified the loop gastrojejunostomy to a Roux-en-Y in 1977 and Wittgrove and colleagues reported the laparoscopic approach in 1994. Essential steps for successful completion of this operation involve: 1. Creating a small pouch out of the larger stomach 2. Attaching a length of jejunum for egress of food out of the restrictive pouch 3.
