Abstract

Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death in the US and the world. In 2011, the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) showed that annual screening of high-risk patients with low-dose CT (LDCT) reduced lung cancer mortality. Since the NLST was published, the US Preventive Services Task Force and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid have recommended annual LDCT for lung cancer screening for certain patients. This teaching script will instruct learners how to identify eligible patients and properly counsel them on the possible harms and benefits of screening using shared decision-making.
