The structure of the calcified exoskeleton of decapod crustaceans consists of 4 distinct layers with respect to their sequence of deposition, and their chemical composition. An account is given of the ultrastructure and evolution of the pore canal system of the cuticle of Carcinus maenas during the moult/intermoult cycle. Degradation of the old cuticle components during the pre-ecdysal period is also examined.
