Study on start-up and operation of VSC-HVDC system

Abstract

In this paper, a new technology is proposed for HVDC start-up and operation using VSC-HVDC system according to the characteristics of the HVDC and VSC-HVDC system. The new concept of the technology is to start HVDC when it has been shut down due to shortage of AC system voltage source for the commutation. The motivation of choosing this technology is to enable HVDC to operate under small amount of power delivery condition when the receiving side is passive network. A physical model, the HVDC system and VSC-HVDC system are connected in parallel to the common bus, for starting HVDC by VSC-HVDC has been developed. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
