Abstract

The trend of North American waste paper recovery rate and the usage rate has drastically increased since the end of 1980. This is due to the active participation of local governments toward recycling. The more popular deinking method in North American has shifted from the washing method in favor of the flotation method due to recent tougher effluent regulations. As a pioneer of old telephone book recycling, Daishowa America Port Angeles mill has accomplished closing the loop by effectively utilizing old telephone books to produce new ones. Since the start up, the mill has produced excellent quality deinking pulp and the paper machines have run successfully with more than 40% deinked pulp.
