Although lymphedema affects millions of people worldwide, its pathophysiology is poorly understood and few randomized clinical trials in the field exist. Because of the lack of evidence-based medicine for lymphedema and the small numbers of physicians focused on the disease, many myths are associated with the condition. It is important to use the best evidence available when counseling patients about their disease. Before recommending an intervention for a patient that negatively affects their quality of life, strong evidence for the efficacy of the intervention must exist.
