Abstract

In this chapter, I discuss and compare Indigenous and Western views of memory and the generations. I give some examples of different kinds of memory to illustrate the similarities and differences between inter- and transgenerational memory. I provide a typology of multigenerational relationship to help clarify academic-, research- and action-based concepts relevant to this field. Having introduced the research and its main themes, I present an extended example to illustrate how the research themes work and discuss a model of cyclical social memory derived from the research themes.
