Abstract

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can affect women of all age groups and is a common problem. The lifetime risk of undergoing an operation for POP is estimated to be around 11 %. With increase in life expectancy, the number of women presenting with POP is likely to increase in the future. The only persistent symptom of POP is the sensation of vaginal bulge, while increasing degrees of prolapse can be associated with bladder, sexual, or bowel dysfunction. POP is not a life-threatening condition but can significantly impair the quality of life of the individual.
