An in-depth sexual history taking is crucial for a correct evaluation and diagnosis of sexual complains and orienting the treatment decision-making process. Considering the suggestions from the most updated references in the field, this chapter will guide the reader through a multifactorial assessment where biological, cognitive, emotional and behavioral, contextual, and interpersonal contributing factors and their ongoing interacting relations play a role in the individual’s current sexual functioning and satisfaction. The author identifies the “top-ten” questions in a sexual interview that can potentially lead to further information and inquiry, also how to get the real opinion of the patient about the possible explanation of the sexual symptom. HCP’s interventions and attitude improving early therapeutic alliance, as well as precipitants to rupture, are discussed. Specific attention is given to the sexual interview’s features when the patient has a mental health disorder. Barriers to discussing sexual issues with psychiatric patients are examined, highlighting the importance of appropriate training.
