This chapter examines the existing literature on social network analysis (SNA). It begins by outlining the underlying theories that inform SNA. Attention then turns to the literature that has examined the application of network analysis concepts within law enforcement. This is followed by a detailed overview of the literature that has explored the application of SNA to criminal networks. The chapter then outlines our current understanding of the challenges and limitations of SNA as applied to criminal networks. The chapter concludes with a summary of the gaps in our knowledge concerning the use of SNA and law enforcement.
