Abstract

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/computer instrumentation (GC/MS/COMP) is the only technique that can provide qualitative and quantitative information on nanogram quantities of individual components in mixtures containing hundreds of compounds. It is an especially powerful technique in the environmental sciences where many toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic organics at trace levels must be determined in complex samples. The applicability and use of GC/MS/COMP techniques has greatly increased in recent years because of this need and the parallel development of all aspects of the instrumentation.
