Abstract

Purpose: The penetration of mathematical methods into socioeconomic activity determines the objective increase in the importance of mathematics as a universal language for describing and studying the subject world and forming the professional thinking of future specialists. The article aims to analyze the conditions for the formation of a competent approach to the study of mathematics at a university at the modern stage of the development of socioeconomic systems. Design/methodology/approach: To solve the tasks and verify the initial assumptions, a set of complementary research methods was used: diagnostic methods, observational methods (direct, indirect, and included observation), experimental methods (diagnostic, forming experiment), and proximal (analysis of students’ activities). During the research, theoretical methods were used (thought experiment, analysis, generalization, and abstraction). Findings: The type of professional competence, which is significant in the context of the transition to intelligent production technologies, is described, which allows to supplement the existing ideas about the structure and nature of professional training for research, increases the possibilities of describing, predicting, and explaining this training in the process of studying mathematics. Research competence in the structure of professional functions of the new specialist is considered as an indicator of his readiness for professional activities in the field of knowledge-intensive production. The priority of science and intellectual-intensive industrial technologies determines the strengthening of the research focus of the study of mathematics in modern universities, the resulting component of which is the research competence of graduates. Originality/value: As a result of the research, it was determined that the main task of modern vocational education is to form a competent specialist who is ready for continuous self-development and self-education. The authors found that the penetration of mathematical methods into professional activity determines an objective increase in the value of mathematics as a universal language of description and study of the subject world. The article revealed the substantive and procedural features of professionally directed study of mathematics in the preparation of future specialists for solving research problems in relation to regional experience.
