Physiological experiments gave early demonstration of the multiple functions and multiple modes of action of phytochrome. The discovery of different phytochrome types and five phytochrome genes opened a possibility to address these questions in molecular terms. The use of photoreceptor mutants allowed not only to attribute different response types to different phytochromes but also to solve some of the previously described paradoxes.
