Political cartoon framing of the NSA snooping scandal

Abstract

This chapter’s analysis of political cartoon representations about the National Security Agency’s (NSA) domestic spying tactics finds that no single group or individual-not the NSA, Edward Snowden, or the Obama administration-was safe from cartoonists’ critiques. The NSA was targeted for its intrusive “Big-Brother” like practices, the Obama administration was critiqued for its reaction to leaks about NSA practices, and even US citizens were lampooned for not being aware of or concerned about violations of their privacy.
