While studying the role of the CSCs for power system stabilization, the dynamics of the CSC can be accounted for by modeling it as a dynamical system. However, for stability studies it is not necessary to have a detailed model. It is adequate to assume that the desired value of the CSC reactance is achieved within a specified time interval. Hence, a first order model is sufficient for this purpose [1]. In this chapter we apply the IDA-PBC methodology to the SMIB system with a CSC, where the CSC is modeled by a first order model and synthesize stabilizing control laws.
