Adaptation Planning for Floods

Abstract

Increasing flood risks have demanded the emergence of planning theories and practices that can deal with the issue of environmental changes, such as climate-related disasters. This chapter portrays the urgency of floods to coastal cities in Southeast Asian region and expanding responses of flood-affected people to lowering their level of vulnerability. Kampung, where most of the urban poor lives, is a laboratory for discovering the embedded planning knowledge. The richness and diversity of adaptive practices are the potential sources of planning knowledge not only for local community but also for cities. Therefore, the people scale adaptation planning is emerged to provide an alternative solution in addressing flood problems.
