Abstract

This paper reviews the development of design methodology in the period since the first conference on design methods, in 1962. Four inter-related areas of research are identified: the management of design process, the structure of design problems, the nature of design activity, and the philosophy of design method. It is concluded that methodology has valid roles to play in design research, education and practice.
