The authors demonstrate that the simple formula, developed by Imbert and Fick for applanation tonometry, needs correction, because it neglects the fact that the cornea is a membrane of finite thickness and stiffness, and that the liquid between cornea and flattening device develops capillary forces. With a diameter of the flattened area between 3 and 3.5 mm., the elastic and capillary forces balance each other in normal human corneas. In case of such a slight applanation the increase of intraocular pressure caused by compressed volume can he neglected. © 1957 S. Karger AG, Basel.
