Abstract

Probability and statistics are indispensable tools in reliability maintenance studies. Although excellent texts exist in these areas, an introduction containing essential concepts is included to make the handbook self-contained. This chapter is organized as follows. The next section provides an introduction to basic probability concepts. The third section introduces the reliability and failure rate function. Commonly used probability distributions are presented in Section 3.5. Finally, Section 3.6 deals with types of data and parameter estimation. © 2009 Springer-Verlag London.
