Aircraft engines account for only 2% of the CO2 emitted to the atmosphere from all sources, but the societal impact of these emissions appears to be proportionately much higher. This is partly because of the highly visible nature of engine exhausts under some flight conditions (e.g. contrails at altitude) and partly because air transport continues to grow relentlessly.
