Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss innovative and successful approaches to career counselling for older workers who transition from their career job to bridge employment or retirement. Bridge employment refers to older workers’ engagement in paid employment after leaving their career job, whereas retirement is the process of completely withdrawing from the labor force. After an introduction to the topic, we first reviewtheoretical models and empirical evidence on predictors and outcomes of older workers’ transitions from a career job to bridge employment or retirement. Next, we review research on career counselling in these contexts. Based on these insights, we conclude with implications for older workers, career counselors, organizations, and researchers.
