Abstract

ICU HADS IESR triangulation ICU 20 31 28 3 18 HADSIESR ICUPTSD In the first section, the ICU experiences and coping methods of patients with distorted memory were clarified after they have been discharged from ICU. The patients descriptions of their ICU experiences included hurtful, experiencing surreal views and sounds, a surreal experience with fear and discomfort, and loss of memory while their coping methods included to talk about his/her ICU experience without hesitation, to ask himself/herself if it was an illusion, hallucination or a dream, to try to reconstruct memory, to recognize that he/she is not the only one who felt the surreal experience, and to explore the meanings of reasons for the experience. In the second section, based on the results obtained in the first section, a nursing support program was developed. This program was supported patients with distorted memory who have been discharged from ICU. In the third section, the usefulness of the program was verified by methodological triangulation that incorporates qualitative evaluation using semistructured interviews, and quantitative evaluation using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale HADS as well as a revised version of the Impact of Event Scale IESR. The program was applied on 20 patients with distorted memory who had been discharged from ICU applied group the results were compared with those of a control distortion group N = 31 and a control nondistortion group N = 28. During the qualitative evaluation, it was found that 18 of the patients had achieved the program goalthey mentioned they had shared his/her experience with others, been explained and understood, confirmed the facts, and found the meaning of the experience.
