Abstract

In a curious symmetry, the notion of a fundamental clash of civilizations is one that has been promoted by both alarmist Westerners and radical Islamist groups, such as al-Qaeda, for whom it is central to its recruitment strategy. Most moderate voices have sought to downplay this idea. While few defend it, the idea persists as a compelling narrative.
