Abstract

In this chapter, we explore direct CVD synthesis of aerogel-like 3D assemblies of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the remarkable properties of such materials, and how they can be turned into useful form factors such as fibers, felts, and tapes. The unique combination of mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic properties afforded by these lightweight multifunctional materials creates new technological possibilities without requiring the slow, diffusion-mediated solution-phase processing steps associated with sol–gel. Herein, we review the properties of CNTs, direct gas-phase pyrolysis synthesis of CNT aerogels, and applications of materials derived from such aerogels including electrodes, sensors, and artificial muscles.
