This chapter looks at the distribution and exhibition of 2010s Hong Kong new indies. The use of alternative ways for local public release, together with international circulation, set these indies apart from other Hong Kong-related Chinese-language films. The question arises, however, regarding the alternativeness of these alternative film circulation routes, most notably those going along the international film festival circuit. I explore the dynamics of this alternativeness based on various ideas from film festival studies. Through exploring the experience of post-2014 Hong Kong political documentaries, I argue that these films’ trajectories in and outside Hong Kong empowered them to become truly transnational, albeit often involuntarily.
