Indonesia is the largest country and the biggest economy in Southeast Asia, and the third-largest democracy and the largest Muslim country in the world. With these distinctions, Indonesia is the country where Islam and democracy go hand in hand. It is no surprise that former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, in her first travels abroad after her appointment, stated that “[Indonesia] has clearly demonstrated so clearly… that Islam, democracy, and modernity can not only exist but thrive together.”1
