The objective of this paper was to reflect on the experience of institutional support in the healthcare district of the Sixth Regional Executive Department of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, starting from the establishment of a new management method that aimed to transform the fragmented actions of the advisory teams and the Family Healthcare Strategy. The process of implementing institutional support took place through qualification of the supporting team, planning, reading of the realities, reorganization of the work process of the Family Healthcare Strategy teams and monitoring and evaluation. Expansion of access to services, institution of a management board and improvement of teamwork were some of the results achieved. We recognize the countless challenges to be faced, such as participation of social control. Furthermore, institutional support favors conscious transformation of the context of healthcare actions.
