For the CO//2 laser beam intensities and residence times studied, the cooling rate ranged from 1. 1 to 9. 5 multiplied by 10**4 degree C/sec. Changes in microstructure correlated with the calculated cooling rates and ranged from a coarse dendritic structure for the slowest cooling rate to a microcrystalline structure for the fastest cooling rate.
