Abstract

There are at present three existing community alarm schemes in Scotland: in Lothian, Central and Highland regions, with several other authorities in the planning stages. Age Concern Scotland realised it was vital to hold a conference to examine the philosophy behind this trend, the reliability of the technology, the implications for other services and, most importantly, what old people felt about this “crisis response.” Studies were presented by John Sewel, Institute for the Study of Sparsely Populated Areas, and Alan Butler, University of Leeds.
