Abstract

Obafemi Awolowo University LISA (OAU LISA) lab was established to promote Statistical excellence among students, staff and researchers from various disciplines within and outside the institution. All our training and workshops encourage quality data analysis using free software such as R and Python programs. To sustain such a lab, we must meet the demands of researchers, staff and students who consult the lab for assistance. Some of their needs demand that we introduce some concepts in advanced mathematics which are germane in obtaining good results, such as: differential equations in analysis and modelling of econometric data; functional analysis to address some problems in maximum likelihood estimation; quadratic forms of expression for extension of univariate into multivariate analysis; and SEIR model for Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) virus attacks in computer servers. These concepts have helped in providing solutions to problems brought into the lab. It has therefore led to collaboration in research and co-supervision of graduate students to completion of their programmes within and outside the Department. Apart from the contributions to advancing mathematical and computational knowledge in statistical analysis, the strategy adopted has also lead to joint publications in reputable journals.
