Introduction to cardiac auscultation

Abstract

Cardiac auscultation is a useful tool that is both quick and cost-effective in identifying many serious heart diseases. To maximize its utility in the clinical setting, providers should educate themselves on proper cardiac auscultation technique. This technique involves three separate components: inspection, palpation, and finally, auscultation. When evaluating patients, it is crucial to first take note of normal heart sounds (S1, S2) so as to more aptly recognize abnormalities. If done correctly, cardiac auscultation can lead to a definitive diagnosis that avoids the use of more extensive imaging and work-up.
