The literature on the effects of aerobic exercise on the pregnant woman, her fetus, and pregnancy outcome is reviewed. These findings are used to provide a prescription for exercise during pregnancy. Although limited, research suggests that moderate exercise is safe for pregnant women without medical or obstetrical complications. Further research is needed to determine if exercise is associated with low birthweight, preterm labor, teratogenic effects, or fetal distress. © 1987.
