Metabolic and bariatric surgery significantly outperforms medical treatment in remitting the dangerous consequences of obesity, diabetes, and related comorbidities. Kidney disease is closely linked to metabolic disease and it is important to understand what the emerging evidence tells us regarding the safety, complications, risk reduction, and physiologic impact metabolic surgery has on overall kidney health and those at risk for renal dysfunction. This chapter will review renal outcomes of bariatric and metabolic surgery, including renal complications after surgery, risk reduction, and changes in kidney function in the short and long term.
