Abstract

The closure of the former East German uranium industry performed under the WISMUT project since 1990 caused, besides other remediation effects, a significant amendment of the water quality of the surface waters downstream the remediation sites, exclusively located in the Elbe watershed. The paper presents the development from the emission point of view and discusses the evolution of the water quality in selected receiving streams, focusing on the Weiße Elster and Zwickauer Mulde catchments.
