Abstract
The concept of a competence-oriented approach towards modelling is examined and a level-oriented description of modelling competencies introduced. The characteristic abilities associated with each level are listed and some illustrative examples are provided. The level-oriented description is related to the concept of mathematical literacy and briefly compared with other descriptions of modelling competence.
