Abstract

(from the chapter) After a brief overview of normal language development,and a description of the components of communication, the focus ofattention will be directed to the language and communication characteristicsof individuals with HFA (high-functioning autism) and AS (Aspergersyndrome). The latter will be addressed within the framework of thesocial-cognitive underpinnings that scaffold language comprehensionand use. Finally, although this chapter is not intended to providespecific information with respect to remediation, it will outlineimportant issues to consider in designing effective interventionprograms.
