Ce compounds, alloys as well as Ce itself have been the subject of intensive investigation by L111-edge X-ray absorption (XA) spectroscopy.1–4 From an analysis of the X-ray absorption near-edge spectrum (XANES), one can obtain information regarding Ce valence,1–4 final-state effects5–7 as well as solid-state effects.7–9 Several Ce compounds and alloys have been probed1–4 by L111-edge XA spectroscopy for a determination of valence (v), an important parameter for the mixed-valent (MV) systems.
