According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), food security expresses the idea that people can produce or buy enough nutritious food to satisfy their daily needs in order to have an active and healthy life. However, despite investments in research and practical solutions, a greater focus on the development of public policies regarding food insecurity is still necessary, as it is still a source of concern, especially with regard to developing countries. Therefore, it is necessary to search for plausible solutions that reformulate and broaden the discussions around two major lines: food security and sustainable agriculture. It is emphasized that through sustainable agriculture it is possible to face these challenges, thus contributing to the supply of fresh, nutritious products, available throughout the year, improving the economic access of the most vulnerable population and cooperating with small farming producers. In this connection, this chapter seeks to compile the main studies related to sustainable agriculture and food security, citing as an example some countries in Latin America., presenting the main advances in research and conducting an essential discussion on the roles of governance in that region in conjunction with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
