Abstract

This review contains the following sections: morphological characters; origin, distribution and adaptation; mode of reproduction; genetics and breeding; chromosome numbers; types and cv.; nitrogen fixation (with Azospirillum brasilense); pests and diseases; sowing and establishment; cutting frequency and height; production and quality of seed; yield, fertilizers, toxicity and mixtures; nutritive value; milk production; and meat production. Spp. discussed include P. notatum, P. plicatulum, P. dilatatum, P. virgatum, P. urvillei, P. malacophyllum, P. commersonii and P. districhium [P. distichum].
